Symposium on Music in Schools

DRAFT: This module has unpublished changes.

The Symposium on Music in Schools is held once every two years at the Yale School of Music as part of the Music in Schools Initiative. With support from the Yale College Class of 1957, the Symposium honors fifty teachers from around the country for their outstanding accomplishments teaching music in public schools. For three days in June, distinguished music educators convene in New Haven to participate in a variety of skill-building workshops, discussions, and other events, culminating with the presentation of fifty Yale Distinguished Music Educator Awards at the closing banquet.

Fifty selected teachers are invited to travel to New Haven, all expenses paid, for the biennial Symposium on Music in Schools. Symposium participants stay in Yale housing and eat in Yale dining halls, as well as attend workshops in Yale classrooms and lecture halls. In this way, teachers have the opportunity to enjoy the full Yale experience while bringing home valuable new insights to shape their teaching. The fifty Distinguished Music Educators are joined at the Symposium by our local music teachers from the New Haven Public Schools and some members of the Class of 1957, whose endowment makes this event possible.
