Sonata for Violin and Piano (2004)

Duration: 14:00

I. Prelude

II. Tarantella

III. Nocturne

IV. Finale

My Violin Sonata was composed over a period of several years, with many of the musical ideas dating from as early as 2001. One such idea is the opening of the Prelude. The violin cadenza here was originally written while I was a student at the American Festival for the Arts Summer Conservatory in Houston, TX. In the summer of 2003, I attended the ENCORE School for Strings held in Hudson, OH. I had never before been exposed to such a high level of string playing, especially that of the violinists. I came away from ENCORE with a fistful of new friends and a wellspring of inspiration to write for violin. As such, I have dedicated this sonata to "great friends and wonderful memories, ENCORE 2003."
